Submitting an app to the App Store can be a waiting game. However, there are times when you cannot afford to wait, such as when you discover a critical bug or need to release an update for a time-sensitive event. In these situations, Apple allows developers to request an expedited review.
According to recent App Store metrics, while over 90% of standard app reviews are completed within 24 to 48 hours, successful expedited reviews are typically processed within just a few hours of submission.
When to Request an Expedited Review
Apple reserves expedited reviews for extenuating circumstances. The most common valid reasons include:
- Critical Bug Fixes: If a recent update introduced a severe bug that causes crashes or prevents users from using the app.
- Time-Sensitive Events: If your app launch or update is tied to a specific real-world event or a heavily promoted marketing campaign.
Steps to Request an Expedited Review
- Submit Your App: Ensure your app or update is already submitted for review in App Store Connect.
- Access the Contact Form: Navigate directly to the App Review Expedite Contact Form.
- Submit Request: Select the app and the option to request an expedited review. Note: Due to recent changes in Apple's expedite request process, you no longer have the option to enter a specific reason or provide supporting details in a text box. Simply submit the request.
Important Considerations
While Apple typically responds to these requests within 24–48 hours, approval is not guaranteed. Because you can no longer provide detailed context or reasons for the expedite request, it is crucial to use this feature sparingly; overusing the expedited review process may lead to future requests being denied.
